Building Permits: Permits will be required for the erection, construction, enlargement, alteration, repair, maintenance, moving, improving, removal, conversion or demolishment of any building or structure regulated by the State Building Code. Permit application forms are available from the Building Code Division on-line @ www.buildingcodedivision.umn.edu . (Examples are located in the appendix of this manual.)

  1. Validity of Permits: The issuance or granting of a permit, approval of plans and specifications shall not be construed to be a permit for or approval of any violation of any of the provisions of this code. No permit presuming to give authority to violate or cancel the provisions of this code shall be valid.

The issuance of a permit based upon plans, specifications and other data shall not prevent the Building Official from thereafter requiring the correction of errors in said plans, specification plans, specifications and other data, or from preventing building operations being carried on thereunder when in violation of this code.

  2. Suspension/Revocation: The Building Official may in writing, suspend/revoke a permit issued under the provisions of the state building code whenever the permit was issued in error on the basis of incorrect information supplied, or in violation of any of the provisions of the state code.

  3. Application for Permits and Plan Review:
    1. Typed application (or on-line application) along with two sets of plans and specifications must be submitted for review and approval at the schematic design stage.

    2. Two sets of plans and specifications must be submitted for review and approval at the design development (50%) stage.

    3. Two complete sets of plans and specifications must be submitted for approval prior to bidding and/or building.

    4. An approved stamped final set of plans and specifications must be maintained on the job site at all times during construction, and all work shall be done in accordance with approved plans.

    5. The final (approved) set of plans and specifications shall not be changed, modified or altered without authorization from the University Building Official.

    6. Each sheet of the plans and specifications must show the University project number. (Contact Records at 612-625-6537 or 612-625-9557 for project number.)
